About Us
The Alevi Federation of Australia (AFA) was established in 2008 to bring Alevi organisations across the country under one umbrella.
In the early 1990's, Alevis in Australia became a more visible community and established a number of Alevi organisations.
The first Alevi organisations were established in Sydney and Mildura in 1991. The following year, the Victoria Alevi Cultural Centre (now known as Alevi Community Council of Australia - ACCA) was established.
Following the Sivas massacres on 2 July 1993, and then the events in Gazi in 1995, a number of other Alevi Cultural Organisations were established, including Springvale Alevi Cultural Centre, Canberra Alevi Cultural Centre and Sydney Alevi Bektasi Cultural Centre. Today, there are six Alevi Cultural Centres across Australia.
Up until recently, each of these organisations operated independently. The idea of bringing all of these Alevi Cultural Centres under the one umbrella was first raised in 2005. After many meetings and lengthy discussions, five organisations decided to come together under the one banner and officially form the Alevi Federation of Australia in 2008.
